引越展


2021年12月、事務所を世田谷から新宿の神楽坂に引っ越す際に、引越展を開催した。引越展とは、引っ越し前の新しいスタジオに模型だけ引っ越しをした状態で、お客さまを呼んで展覧会をするというものである。とは言え引っ越し前は荷造りなどで忙しくなりそうなので、夜間だけ開催することにした。学生や忙しい設計事務所の若い人たちも、夜遅い時間ならば来られるのではないか、という理由もあった。


企画や準備は、スタッフやインターンの有志のメンバーが就業後の時間に部活動的に集まって進めた。夜にやるのであれば、夜ならではのことがしたいね、という話になって、部屋の電気を消して暗くして考えてみたりした。パソコンのモニターの光を受けた模型が怪しげに光り、夜に人間が帰った後の事務所で、模型たちが動いているかもしれないね、という話になった。模型を作っている私たちの悪口を言っているかもしれない。その辺に置いてあるお菓子を食べているかもしれない。生き物のように。夜の動物園のように。私たちが目指している建築は、それくらい意思のある形をもっているはずである。そんな話になった。


そのようなことで、暗闇の中で、自らの意思をもって、うごめいているような建築の模型たち、という展示方法になった。現在進行中の1/50, 1/20の模型に、ゆっくりと明滅するライトを入れ込み、４本の脚をつけた。会場であるスタジオは、床上120センチまでの高さを鮮やかな青で塗り込んだ。脚をつけた模型を並べると、深海に浮かぶくらげの群のようにもなった。模型それぞれの輪郭は闇に溶けながら、建築の内側の形は光によって浮き上がり、本来の建築の体験に通じる部分があるのではないかと感じた。

exhibition -office moving-


In December 2021, when we moved our office from Setagaya to Kagurazaka in Shinjuku, we held a "moving exhibition". The idea was to hold an exhibition in a new studio before the move, with only the models moved in, and invite guests. And, we decided to hold the exhibition only in the evening because we would be busy packing before the move. We also thought that students and young people from busy design offices would be able to come to the exhibition in the late evening.


The planning and preparation was done by the staff and internship volunteers who gathered after work in a club-like atmosphere. We talked about how we wanted to do something unique at night if we were going to do it at night, so we turned off the lights in the room and tried thinking in the dark. The models glowed suspiciously in the light from the computer monitor, and we talked about how the models might be moving in the office at night, after people had gone home. They might be saying bad things about us, the model builders. They might be eating the sweets that we leave around the office. Like a creature. Like a zoo at night. The architecture we are aiming for should have a form with that much intention.


That is why we decided to exhibit models of architecture that seem to be moving in the dark, with their own will. The ongoing 1/50 and 1/20 models were fitted with slowly flickering lights and four legs. The studio, the venue for the exhibition, was painted in bright blue up to 120cm above the floor. When the models with legs were placed side by side, they looked like a group of jellyfish floating in the deep sea. While the outline of each model melted into the darkness, the inner form of the architecture was brought to life by the light, and I felt that there was something similar to the original experience of architecture.
